What patch should I install?
Many of you are not sure what patch to install to fix either Open For Business or the Family Fun Stuff. Here are some installation scenarios:
- I've installed Open For Business Only. You'll need the OFB patch
- I've installed Family Fun only. You'll need the Family Fun patch
- I've installed Open for Business and Family Fun. You?ll need to get both patches in order to get the full effect. It won?t hurt your game to install both. It doesn?t matter the order in which you install the patches
- I've uninstalled Open For Business but I still play Family Fun. You'll need the Family Fun patch
- I've uninstalled Family Fun but I still play Open For Business. You'll need the Open For Business patch
- I bought a copy of Open For Business after the patch was released. You?ll still need the Open For Business patch
- I bought a copy of Family Fun after the patch was released. You?ll still need the Family Fun patch
You can find all patches here:
http://thesims2.ea.com/update/?pid=Help_patches
Errors during installation:
If you are receiving an error during installation, this could be for many reasons. Your computer may have a virus, your game may be using hacked/modified content, incompatible video card, or you may have a pirated copy of the game. To help troubleshoot this issue, please see our minimum game specs for:
Open For Business - http://thesims2.ea.com/help/detail.php?help_id=219
Family Fun Stuff Pack - http://thesims2.ea.com/help/detail.php?help_id=238
If you are still receiving the error, please post here with the following information:
- What is the exact error message?
- When do you receive the error?
- What patch are you trying to install?
- What Sims 2 games do you have installed?

Thanks. For those who are getting the message to uninstall OFB when you install the patch, it's actually not as detrimental as it seems. Just copy your Sims 2 file (from My Documents/EA Games/The sims 2) to your desktop, and uninstall the EP, then reinstall. Install the patch, and then replace the Sims 2 file in EA Games with the one from the desktop, and you're back in business. It took me all of 10 minutes, and well worth it, in my mind, for getting all of the bugs and glitches fixed. So don't panic.

Actually, you don't have to reinstall the game. Only one file needs to be replaced with the original version of that file from the CD, "globalcatbin.bundle.package", following the simple instructions here: http://www.modthesims2.com/showthread.php?p=1266101#post1266101 I think it only effects those who have the previous OFB patch installed.

When replacing the Sims 2 file from teh desktop, do you delete the Sims 2 file you are replacing?
|
|
|
|
|
 | |
|
|
If you place The Sims 2 from the desktop back into the EA Games folder it will overwrite the one your replacing, or you can delete the one you are replacing. It doesnt matter. The one that is getting will be gone either way
Try to keep up!

As long as you save your current sims 2 file first, you should be ok. Then, once you've reinstalled, and got the patch installed, go into your game, make sure everything is hunky dory with the install, then exit. Delete the Sims 2 file that's in My Documents/EA Games, and move the old one, the one you saved before you uninstalled OFB, into the EA Games folder.
Then when you go back into your game, it should be just like you left it.

If you are still receiving the error, please post here with the following information:
- What is the exact error message?
- When do you receive the error?
- What patch are you trying to install?
- What Sims 2 games do you have installed?

1.) The exact error message is: Error during patch installation. You may need to uninstall and reinstall The Sims 2 Open For Business. Please make sure you back up your saved games first.
2.) I recieve the error a few seconds after the patch begins installation.
3.) I am trying to install The Sims 2: Open For Business patch.
4.) I have The Sims 2, The Sims 2: University, The Sims 2: Nightlife, The Sims 2: Open For Business, and The Sims 2: Family Fun Stuff installed.
One other note, as a result of trying to install the updated Open For Business patch, I have lost one of the OFB objects. It just shows no picture and if I click it, the I can place the object but it does not appear. It is the misson themed counter.

Thank you for reading my GB entry and addressing this, Mel. There's also the question to some people about ALL of the EPs patches.
For example I have all of the EPs, so.....how many of those (if any) actually patch the previously installed EP? Like, say I installed the base, Uni, and NL......and I was getting ready to install OFB....would the OFB game itself patch all or any of those previously installed EPs?
Because I had to reinstall all of mine last night and the only patches that they had was to patch up the base game....so after it was done with Uni, when the rest of the EPs got to the patch part, it checked and then I got a pop-up saying that it was already up-to-date.
Therefore, I keep trying to tell people that they only patch the base game and no one listens, so am I wrong or what?
Ugh, every time I try to explain it I confuse myself.

It's my understanding that you have do download the patches for each EP that you have. I think the only exception is the the patch for the base game. I believe Uni has the fixes for the base game. However, it wouldn't hurt anything to install them all. If you get "computer already updated message" (which I have only received with the base patch, not any of the EP patches) then press okay and move on.
The message states that if you have NL you only need the NL patch not NL and Uni but I needed to install both to fix all the problems with my game.

Exactly! I know, that's what I believe too, that's why it'd be nice for a Maxoid to let us know on this as well.
You do only need the Nightlife patch though (instead of Uni and NL), because the NL patch includes the Uni patch.

I certainly hope in the future this information is sent out at the time the same time the patches are released, not afterwards.
This issue has caused a lot of confusion for many players that could have been avoided up front.

I can't install the patch for OfB. I keep getting an error that I have to uninstall everything and try again. Is there a way around this? I've downloaded the patch over and over and again and tried to install it several times without success...

To solve this:
1. With your OFB CD in the drive, browse to D:\compressed.zip\TSData\Res\Catalog\Bins (D:\ is default, but can be another letter, depending on the name of the drive your CD is in)

To solve this:
1. With your OFB CD in the drive, browse to D:\compressed.zip\TSData\Res\Catalog\Bins (D:\ is default, but can be another letter, depending on the name of the drive your CD is in)

Just a reminder that if you have modified any of your game files, like the GraphicsRules.sgr file, you will need to replace them with the originals (which hopefully you made backups of) before installing patches or any future expansion/stuff packs. And with some of the files, overwriting them will not work you have to actually Cut or delete the modified file and remove it, then move the original back in.

I gather there are new OFB/FFS patches. I had trouble working out if there was actually a new patch or if the one I have from March is still good. Please can you fix the sticky in the OFB area of the board to say there is a new patch. The existing sticky is from March, so it looks like the March patch is all there is. Please could you also think about dating the patches on the the page where you download them. Then you can check if you have it before you download. The help page about patches is now unhelpful as well. But thanks for the patch guys.
EDIT -
RE- do you need all the patches? Every EP gives you the best game they can provide so it includes fixed game code for previous EPs. So if you install base game + Uni +NL for example you only now need the NL patch. I did hear that patching twice causes trouble. When you add an EP you should also add patches for that EP (or so EA support told me) So if you have base game and OFB and add Uni to it, you should also get the Uni patch This is what EA technical help told me anyway and it really should be explained clearly on the help pages for downloading patches. There isn't even an FAQ about it on the EA site!
Best advice install and patch everything in correct order, but it's not worth re-installing to get there!
PS I had the error message problem already reported and fixed is as explained by Squinge and tsyak777

Ever since I've installed the patches, there's some issue with several of the girls tops that came with either FFS or OFB. The peasant top with the poof sleeves have a strange line across the neck. It's a line I've seen on meshes made by other people before, but I've never had it happen with a Maxis made mesh. It appears no matter what genetic skin is being used with it. Anyone know why this is caused and how to fix it and if it's happening because of the patches or not?

I can't install or play NL until I resolve this and I am afraid to uninstall the first game. do you have any suggestions?

There is no way I'm installing any more patches. Last time? I tried to save the games to the desktop and then replace as per instructions, and still lost everything. Months of play. I'll just live w/the glitches until they can make patches that don't need file manipulation in order to install.

Maybe this will help someone. I just installed OFB and FF...first I tried to install the patches by saving them to desktop and then running them...that didn't work. So I went online, and instead of saving, I ran the OFB patch directly from the website. That WORKED, so I crossed my fingers and did the same with the FFS patch...guess what, it worked as well! It took freakin' forever, but I am finally done with the patches, and the game works fine. Hope this helps somebody, I was ready to just give up!

- What is the exact error message?
The application has performed an error and will now close.
- When do you receive the error?
When I load my university family. It crashes approx 2/3rds through loading.
- What patch are you trying to install?
I installed both OFB and FF, in reverse order though.
- What Sims 2 games do you have installed?
I have all Sims 2 expansions.
I have so far tried to reboot the PC and disable all my custom content. I have not installed any other programmes on this PC since installing the patches. I have also nothing running in the background.
Any tips would be appreciated! :)
Also, in my regular neighbourhood, I hired a nanny for the evening, and now I can't seem to get rid of her. I had the adult dismiss her when she came home, but the nanny is still wandering in the house...

"Error during update installation"
I receive the error message when I try to install the patch for the Sims 2 (no expansions)
I have University, and I tried to install it, but when it got to the point for updating the software at the end of installation, I had the issue with an update error.
Right now, the only game I have installed is the main one.

Hey guys,
I had ALL sorts of problems with installing the various patches after transferring over to a new computer, and I basically tried everything but to no avail. It always hung somewhere (usually at objects.package) and I would get an "error during update installation" message. I tried stuff like copying the original file over from the CD, removing downloads/custom content, running disk checks, but to no avail. Now, I'm not saying my solution will solve everyone's problems, but I just hope to be able to help some people.
It turns out that the problem for me was not so much a problem with the game files itself, but of incomplete/corrupted downloads of the various patches. Till now, I don't know why this is so, it could be a screw up of windows system files or something. See, when I downloaded the patches onto my other computer, then burnt them over to a CD, and ran them on the computer which was having problems, all the patches went perfectly fine for me. So yea, if your patches keep failing, try downloading them onto another computer or something. It worked for me. Cheerios!
EDIT: Ok, I think I figured out the cause of my not being able to download proper versions. Apparently it has to do with the network card on my lousy ASUS A8N-E mobo. I found a forum whereby many people were having the same problems, and all were using that series of motherboard. It seems uninstalling the Nvidia network access manager of something solves the problem, though I haven't tried it yet.
So, if any of you are suffering from corrupted/incomplete downloads, it could be due to your network software, especially if you have the Nvidia network access manager installed.

From all I've read, this whole "save your folder, uninstall, reinstall and, then install patch and then replace file" just doesn't sound worth my time. The only major problems in my game have been longed fixed by the hacks I downloaded, and I'm not having any of the problems described that the patch fixes.
I do have a problem with Sims faces dissapearing when they put on their uniform if they have facial hair, and one issue with my students sometimes being called to class 12 hours before it's their class time and staying gone until their real class is over over 12 hours later, but these issues I've been dealing with myself by changing majors or moving them to new dorms, so I think at this time I'm going to avoid the patch.
Just like family Fun, it seems the patch is more trouble than its worth, so I'll just wait for the next EP.

I installed the OFB patch and to my disappointment and surprise the food bug is still there. When my sims buy food at a community lot, the game still thinks they have no food at home at all. I find it too difficult to keep track of it myself, so my sims are just ordering groceries to be delivered instead - at least they don't overbuy that way. Hence grocery stores are not fulfilling any real function in my game. This was such an obvious bug, I would really have expected it to be fixed. I had no problems installing the patch, that went without a hitch. Am I doing something wrong?

- What is the exact error message?
"Error during update installation. You may need to unistall and reinstall The Sims 2 Open for Business. Please make sure you back up your saved games first.
- When do you receive the error?
I receive the error when the patch tries to update TSData\Res\Objects\objects.package file.
- What patch are you trying to install?
OFB patch.
- What Sims 2 games do you have installed?
All Sims 2 games (university, nightlife, OFB, FFS). Tried to completely reinstall ALL games, to no avail. Removed all custom content (game is completely free of any modifications). Cleared out the registry to ensure that nothing there is conflicting with the patch. None of these steps fixed the problem. My computer does not have a virus (scanned with Norton), and it exceeds the minimum system requirements by far.

The counters you speak of, are they Maxis-made or made by a player? If they're downloads, try to reinstall the dowload instead of the game.
Hope that helps!

It is the "The More Impossible Mission Counter" from Open For Business. The counters do not have a picture in the catalouge, just a "No Pic" and If you Place on in hte room, you get a highlighted square and it will take money out of your account, but you can't see or use the counter. The worst part is you can't remove the counter as there is nothing to grab onto. I have ruined my greek house wiht on of there in the hallway on accident, so I can't play my legacy family till ?I get this cleared up.

The Problem counters Can be removed by using another totally different counter and several attempts at connecting to the invisible counters. In the buy mode use a different kind of counter and move it around the kitchen in question. If you have the Patience to do this the invisible will become visible when hooked up with the other counter. then just grab and delete the problem counter. Keep repeating this until there is nothing left blocking your Sims way And when you place a counter it does not turn into a corner when it is not in a corner. If that happens then that means it is attaching to an invisible counter. The invisible counter can be gotten rid of, it just takes a bit of time and frustration. Watch out for the invisible counter in the Landgraab IV house kitchen. That is where I first 'ran' into them.
Don't worry, be happy,,,, only if your rich.

Well, that didn't work. The wierd thing is that in houses where I've already used the counters, pre-patch, they are still there, but if Itry to use the eyedropper tool to get more, they don't show up!?!?! Does anyone know if they are gonna fix this?

I got my mission counters back! The problem was that when I downloaded the patch on my super slow dialup connection, it only got 17 out of 27 MB, but It still acted like a whole patch. Go fig. I hchecked the file size on a whim (cause I've had that problem on this site before.) So I re-downloaded it on to a relative's computer with broadband, and now everything is peachy! Well, so far...

Hello
I have The Open for business expansion pack.
I tried to install the patch to correct the bugs but I couldn't.
The message error is "Error during patch installation. You may need to uninstall and reinstall The Sims 2 Open For Business. Please make sure you back up your saved games first."
I got the message immediatly after cliking on the patch.
I tried to download the patch again and again.
I tried to uninstall and reinstall OFB. I tried to uninstall and reinstall all the game. I tried to reinstall windows. I tried the solutions of this topic. But nothing works.
I have The sims 2, University, Nightlife, Holiday, Open for business, Family fun. All are original games.
Do you think that the next expansion will have this patch include ? I'm totally desperate.
Or a magic potion ?
Sorry for my english he is very bad, I'm french.

What worked for me was to uninstall Family Fun, and then install the Open For Business patch. I then installed Family Fun again and patched it as well. It's annoying, but unfortunately each expansion pack makes this game a little more difficult to play. At least there's a fix for this problem :)

Yes but, sorry for me, I've already tried this. I tried to install the patch :

:(
I tried anything.

Sure.
"Your computer may have a virus" : I made a scan with my antivirus. There was no virus.
"your game may be using hacked/modified content" : I tried without any custom contents, because I uninstalled the sims 2 and all expansion packs.
" incompatible video card": My video card is compatible.
" you may have a pirated copy of the game" : My game and all my expansions are original. That's why I'm so frustrate.

The only patches I can get to install are the base game dvd patch and the new family fun patch. University, Nightlife and Open for business patches all error out during the tsdata\res\object.object file. I was not having any problems with the patches until I reinstalled my game and redownloaded the patches. Now I can't get those 3 to install without erroring out. I already tried reinstalling all the games several times and nothing helps. I have the base game and all of the expansions which are all legally bought. got them at wal-mart and gamestop. My system meets the minimum requirements, I ran a virus scan and I have no virus's. I have absolutely no custom content in the game.
I'm not having any problems with the game, but I would like my game to be fully patched just in case. What do I do?

- What is the exact error message?
The sims2 patch has encountered an error and needs to shut down.
- When do you receive the error?
When it reaches about a quarter a way into the screen that says ts2 objects in the line (i can't remember the exact place.
- What patch are you trying to install?
The OFB and FF patch the error occurs with both
- What Sims 2 games do you have installed?
I have all the sims 2 games and stuff packs
I have tried taking out my downloads folder (in case i had hacked content)
I have run a virus and spyware scan (both were clean)
I haven't had any problems loading patches before
The only thing i can think of is that i installed two packs at once (can't remember which 2 now), and forgot to download a patch along the way. I have noticed all my alien children are related (unlike my laptop game with all the patches where they are not), I have noticed recently that women can no longer try for baby on a community lot when I'm playing a male sim.

Okay so I received Family Fun when it first came out. But just the other day I tried the whole patch thing for both FFS and OFB. (I haven't played in a couple of months) OFB didn't work I was getting the Uninstall and Reinstall OFB. Well I just left it alone, and started playing FFS. But with FFS I don't have the right video card and all of my houses were blinking red and black. So today I go to uninstall FFS and it's worse than before.
I uninstalled all of my games (yup without saving anything because I figured what a way to start families over). Now I'm having a bigger problem with everything. All of my games (TS2, Uni, and Nightlife) install fine, but once I try to put OFB in it keeps reading as Nightlife. Any idea what the heck is going on?

OK... I don't know if anyone wants to do it this way but I fixed all the problems that I'm aware I was having by uninstalling everything (no backups of houses or games) I just extracted my fave favorite sim family from the Sims 2 to Bodyshop using SimPE and packaged each sim up.
Then I reinstalled the entire game, installing each patch for that version of the game before installing the next expansion pack. All the little bugs I was experiencing seem to be and my missing mission cabinets are back and the game appears to be running extremely smooth.
I doubt this resolution is for everyone, but thought I would at least share it with you.
Hugs,
Jase~

I haven't got FFS. Today, I downloaded OFB Patch, and I had a bit of a trouble, but I could find the answer in the BBs (thank you, fellows :) )
But now that I can play, I realized that my young adults who were living in college before I installed the game have lost...er... I'm not sure how it's called. The bar which allows you to know how are your califications depending on the skills you've got :P (sorry)
But they've got the right skills, and still, the bar is little, as if they hadn't got not even one =(
Could you please help me?

YoSnape, you probably should make a new post so that people know you need help...Not everyone is going to keep coming back to this thread if they have read it before...Someone might miss this thread that knows how to fix your problem
Try to keep up!

Well Under The Sims 2 folder I only have The Sims 2 and Sims 2 University even though I have NL and OFB what is that about? Are some files missing or is there meant to be only folders for those 2 things?

I just installed Open For Business and needed the patch to enter some of the households. The patch gave no errors while being installed, but now the path to access the game can't be found.
Exact wording: Windows cannot access the specified device, path, or file. You may not have the appropriate permissions to access the item.
I'm guessing that this has something to do with the game being installed on my external hard drive, but I'm not sure how to fix it. Thanks.

If anyone else has this problem, I seem to have solved it by turning the external hard drive off, logging out, logging back in and then running the game as normal.

If you are still receiving the error, please post here with the following information:
- What is the exact error message?
- When do you receive the error?
- What patch are you trying to install?
- What Sims 2 games do you have installed?
The exact error message is: "error during update installation"
I receive it when it's updating the effects.package of The Sims 2 game.
I'm trying to install the Sims 2 DVD patch
I've got all of them but since I bought the Seasons EP I've uninstalled all of them and started from scratch. I may also add that I'm running it under Windows Vista and I didn't have problems until I installed Seasons EP, uninstalled everything and started all over again. The problem is that if I don't install the patch I can't run the games because Vista adresses compatibility issues.
Thank you very much.

First off, I hope this is the right place to go to.
I'm currently upgrading my PC. The desktop I played The Sims 2 on has gone to the great Recycle Bin in the sky, so I'm in the process of putting all my stuff on my new PC. Problem is that the new PC (using it now) has Vista, which I've never wanted to use, but circumstances have forced it (won't bore you all with them).
Here's my question - I have The Sims 2 (DVD) and Bon Voyage (DVD), with no other expansion/stuff packs. Which patches do I install? Remember I have Vista. Are there are extra issues thrown up by this O.S?
Thanks for reading ^_^
Searching for my someone just for me

ALWAYS install the patches for what you have. You'll need them.
The only time you *don't* install every appropriate patch is when you have Deluxe/Double Deluxe (main game + Nightlife) [and perhaps the Holiday Editions don't need to be main game patched as well?], University Life Collection (University), Best of Business Collection (Open For Business) or the upcoming Fun With Pets Collection (Pets). The expansions in the combo packs come pre-patched [not that the patches for those expansions work with the collections, anyways]
