The little fish tank that's available in the buy mode won't show the fish... and I have told my sims to put fish in the tank. I just see...nothing. My graphics are good enough to show the sims' reflections in the mirrors... so what's going on?

Knowledge is not limited to what you can find in a text book.
You have to set the graphic effects on high, then you should be able to see the fish, not only the fish in the tank but also (if you have seasons) the ones in the lake.

I could never see the fish either, but I could see the Sims' reflection in the mirror. My kids bought me a new graphics card so I could play Sims 3 and now when I play 2 (I play both) I can see the fishes... I'm so excited. It's wonderful to actually see what the Sims are watching and feeding... I used to have many a dead fish since I couldn't see them it was hard to remember to take care of them.
Anyhoo, so as I was saying even though you can see them in the mirror, doesn't necessarily mean you can see the fishies. I couldn't...
